We are looking to find a loving family for our 5 year old Saint Bernard, Emma. We adopted Emma when she was around 6 months old, and she has been a loyal and loving member of our family ever since. She loves to lay around with the family (though note she has quite the snore!), wrestle with our other dog and burrow herself into anyone who will give her some pets!
The reason we are looking to re-home Emma stems from Emma displaying certain behavioral issues and our having a newborn baby in our home. Emma has displayed food aggression with respect to her own food and the food of our other dog. She will guard her (or our other dog’s) food bowl and refuse to let it be taken by standing over the bowl and growling/snarling. She also has displayed some aggression toward our other dog in the form of growling/biting, which has seemed unprovoked. While she has never drawn blood or injured our other dog, the aggression is alarming to us. She also is a generally very shy/protective dog who takes time to warm up to strangers and needs to be carefully introduced. She will from time to time bark at strangers while on walks, especially if the strangers are walking toward us/talking to us. She is similarly shy when meeting new dogs. Ultimately, we have never had an incident where she has bitten anyone or injured any person or dog, but we’re also very cautious with Emma and are conscientious of our surroundings with her. Given the fact that she is 120 pounds and we have a newborn in our home, we feel it is best to find a loving, suitable home for her. It’s an incredibly tough decision, as she truly is such a loving and sweet dog the majority of the time, but it feels like a decision that we must make for us and for Emma.
She is spayed and has had regular shots, flea meds, vet visits, etc. (and seems by all indications to be in good health) and has been loved dearly for years.
