Stella is a 2-year-old spayed female St. Bernard who came to us from Mexicali. She is social and people-affiliated, with no concerning behaviors toward strangers. She has done well with men, women, and children.
Behaviorally, Stella appears under-socialized and can become overwhelmed in new situations. This presents as leash pulling, moderate to high arousal, and frustrated barking at other dogs during walks. We are currently working on gentle leader training and focus-building activities (e.g., “find it”) to support her leash manners and reduce reactivity.
Stella cannot live with cats. She was previously adopted into a cat home but had to be returned due to her high chase drive and the cats’ stress.
She has done well with at least one other dog—a 35–40 lb female herding mix—demonstrating appropriate play and high tolerance. Since her return, she has not been re-paired with another dog.
Stella is affectionate and bonds closely with her handlers. She’s gentle, playful, and enjoys water. She’s also been a great office companion, calmly chewing on bones or high-value chews while staff work.
Key Notes:
• No cats
• Potential with appropriate dog companion
• Needs continued training for leash reactivity
• Very people-social and responsive to caregivers
Stella is a sweet-natured, gentle giant who will thrive in a calm, supportive environment with continued structure and training.
