Max
Max is a 5 year old, petite owner surrender that had very little socialization in his former life. He was a 100% outside dog that never left his backyard and his family had little time for him. He currently weighs about 85 pounds and could stand to gain another 10 or 15 pounds to be at a good weight for his frame..
Max has been enjoying time inside at his foster home in Visalia. He does really well in the house. He can be left alone, doesn’t get on counters, doesn’t get on furniture, unless invited, he’s even housebroken now. BUT, tables are fair game if they have food on them and you’re not watching. He does like to swipe food if he’s given the chance. He sleeps in the son's room at night, and he uses the dog door. He needs more work walking on a leash, he’s unsure on loading up into a car, but he rides nicely.
He will need to go with a family or person who is a strong leader. He is a little stubborn at times. Max is a controlling, dominant male. So he’d be best paired with confident submissive females, he can be paired with male dogs his size if you’re an alpha leader. No cats, unless you can make sure he is never alone with them…he’s too curious and his prey drive strong, so they interest him to distraction. Interestingly, he gets along well with small dogs of either sex..
We’ve been working on the “wait” command when it’s time to eat, we’re getting better, but it’s definitely not mastered.
He is a love bug, loves to lay his head in your lap and be petted for hours. He is good with kids of all ages, though under the age of 5, would need supervision as Max is a high energy guy. He loves for you to throw the ball, but he’s been taught that keep away is the perfect game, so he never brings it back, nor does he let go of it when you are able to get your hands on it. That being said, Max is also very mouthy, he’s never been taught to play gently, or that hands are not play toys, and it can look pretty scary when he comes at you and his mouth is snapping in the air. He’s not being mean, he’s just immature because he’s not been taught the proper way to interact with people during play.
I am assuming that because he’s been a total outside dog, he’s used to alerting (barking) in certain instances. Fireworks, gunfire, loud banging noises… he will bark. This include the TV, he even charges the TV when some of these noises happen, not understanding that everybody in his pack is ok. We’re working on it… but it takes time. Even with all the little quirks he has, he does redirect easily and he really is a goofy and fun boy. He has a LOT of love to give and would make a great addition to a family.
