We are saddened to report that Nana (originally Lady Grace) crossed the rainbow bridge. Our condolences go out to Kim, who gave Nana the best year of her life.
Our story begins on St. Patrick’s Day 2013 with “Let’s go meet a dog”…
Sunny Saints connected us with a fabulous foster family who found you at a shelter in Hollywood Hills and a connection was made instantly and “we came home with a dog”…
Your name then was “Lady Grace”… but when I saw the illustration of Nana from Peter Pan it was you! You learned your name in less than three days - such a smart lady!
Within the first month we were at the vet because you couldn’t resist consuming the squeaker from the toys you wouldn’t put down until you found that little culprit. That is when our bond was certain. After x-rays that didn’t look promising, I left you at Dr. Alley’s to see if your intestines looked worse or better in a few hours. When I returned to the vet that evening Dr. Alley was talking to me and you started barking which made us both smile - you recognized my voice and you knew I was back for you and you insisted we get the heck out of there. You bounced back, returned home with an appetite, glued to my side - oh yes, and we banned squeaky animal toys from the premises.
Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter you were my companion - you supervised my gardening and all meal preparation, you encouraged and comforted me in “dating”, your snoring lulled me to sleep. Your constant reassurance that all was well in our home brought a peace that I never knew was missing until you arrived. You made our house a home with your silly moments of “chase me around the tree” even though we all could have caught you we let you believe you were really clever and fast. How about the time I tried to give you a shower? Your face clearly told me this isn’t going to be a good idea but you went along with it anyway. Nan, you taught me to appreciate the simple things in life, like on our walks to the park where you stopped and smelled each flower and as you grew old and achy, you taught me about optimism in the face of adversity.
I’m incredibly grateful for Wednesday, April 9th, 2014 - that last day we shared together - where chicken, squeaky animal toys, belly rubs, love, love, love was shared throughout the day. I know you were getting weaker and experiencing discomfort. Your selflessness and unwavering loyalty are admired Nan. You uttered a tremendous sigh of relief after the sedative was administered as you gently laid your head as gracefully as you always did between your big paws - paws that I will miss. You looked like you were finally resting comfortably and then you went to sleep. Even though I think I’m going to see your sweet face coming into a room to find me, I am consoled knowing you are not suffering, panting excessively, nor uncomfortable any longer. You kept your dignity intact until the final breath - what a noble lady!
We miss you Nana “banana” - my best friend

“Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day. It is amazing how much love and laughter they bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them.”
